Around 1am on July 5, 2012, a Navman GPS navigation device was stolen along with some other communications equipment, from one of St. John?s Counties Manukau ambulances in Papatoetoe. Because GPS navigation systems are so crucial in cutting emergency response times, a concerned citizen decided to donate her brand-new navigation device to Counties Manukau ambulances. Due to her generosity, residents of this rural region can rest easy, knowing that in case of an emergency, their ambulances will arrive as quickly as possible.

?Going out west ? it?s like another planet. I tend to get lost,? Avril Brown, the woman who donated her GPS navigation device, told Stuff, a publication in New Zealand She had originally purchased the GPS navigation device to help her visit her grandchildren in West Aukland, after seeing it on sale. She even had her grandson help her set it up, but it never got used. ?It had been sitting in the wardrobe and I thought ?No! That?s ridiculous, you silly old woman ? you shouldn?t have it there ? it should be put to good use,? Mrs. Brown explained. ?And besides that, I would like to make sure my children, great grand children, grandchildren, friends and neighbors can have attention as quick as possible.
?
Patsy Carlyle, who received the GPS device from Brown, is grateful for the good samaritan. ?I work in a rapid response vehicle and I work on my own so I rely very heavily on a GPS to get me around? It saves a lot of valuable time not looking at map books and stopping and starting,? she explained to Stuff. ?A lot of rural properties don?t even have letter boxes but the GPS will say you are coming up to number 29 ? turn left.? She continues, ?One person?s awful act has actually resulted in positive stuff. We are hoping the person who has done it has been shamed and will return the equipment.?
