Motherhood is considered as one of the noblest calling a woman can have and it?s also equally difficult. Women in particular are bombarded with expectations and ideals of perfect motherhood that it burdens them not to reach those expectations. From childbirth, taking kids to school, helping with homework, doing chores, filial duties and civic associations; mothers are generally multitaskers. The ability to execute a variety of tasks in a given time is stressful and nerve wracking. It is no wonder that there are many women who develop negative coping strategies in order to adapt to their challenging lifestyle.
Alcohol and prescription medication addiction are rising among women specially mothers. The current statistics have revealed that only 1.7% of women felt that they needed therapy and actually received it in inpatient treatment centers. A percentage of 4.6 of women felt that they needed treatment but did not pursue treatment and 93.7% of women felt they do not need any treatment for their addiction. These data only shows us that there are many addicted women who are left unknown because they consider their own addiction as mild and under control. The problem with this is that addiction deepens in time. Gender is a big consideration specially in research about addiction and its severity. Men and women differ in what causes their addiction.
Women in general tend to do as many things as possible in a short time. Moms are concrete examples of multitaskers. The ability to keep and maintain the balance of work, family, and home is considered a great accomplishment for women. Searching for ways in keeping that balance is of high regard even if it wears these women out physically and mentally. Out of experimentation, women learn how to cope with the demands of life. Alcohol is of easy access and reduces tension and stress for the time being. Feelings of relaxation can come among stressed out women after a day?s heavy work. Over time the habit of drinking alcohol after a day?s work is developed and without much thought, addiction has been developed as well. Cases like these have been observed in treatment centers. Many women who seek treatment didn?t consider ending up an addict the moment they started consuming alcohol or taking drugs.
Issues of women especially moms who developed addiction are on the rise. It is important that women get empowered and learn better positive coping ways in facing the demands every day life. Perfection must be a goal for everyone but reaching the goal is not an easy step. Finding joy in everyday accomplishments can bring greater results rather than insisting on finishing a task that?s beyond a person?s ability. Loftier means are available in order to find strength in dealing with everyday life.
