Top ingredients for nutrient timing in sports nutrition

Nutrient timing, or rather ?ingredient timing,? is one of the most powerful ways to enhance athletic training and performance. Which ingredients are tops in sports science?

Carbohydrate forms

Hundredths of a second can separate a gold medal winner from someone who doesn?t make it to the Olympic medal stand. Therefore, athletes are looking to gain every performance advantage they can get their hands on. As scientific advances in sports nutrition continue to unfold, specific functional ingredients can help athletes train harder, gain strength, size and speed, and feel better so they perform their best.

The concept of ?nutrient timing,? which should more aptly be called ?ingredient timing,? continues to prevail as one of the most powerful methods of enhancing training and performance. And, specific ingredients have made their way to the forefront of sports science research.

Here?s a look at the top ingredients and the science behind them: carbohydrates, protein and amino acids, caffeine, beta-alanine and creatine.

Carbohydrates are the primary fuel used during aerobic exercise and perhaps one of the most researched ergogenic aids of modern times. The importance of carbohydrates was highlighted on a football field in the 1960s when scientists at the University of Florida (the Gators) realized their players were running low on energy and needed a quick source of carbohydrates during play. The first true sports drink was developed in response to this realization, to help rapidly refuel and rehydrate these football players. Gatorade use quickly spread to all levels of athletes across all sports.

By the 1980s, endurance athletes started espousing the benefits of carbohydrates and the concept of carbohydrate loading?a method used to saturate one?s stores of carbohydrates in the form of glycogen in muscle tissue. Muscle glycogen stores are limited and once they start to decline, a few hours into exercise, athletic performance suffers. Therefore, providing a steady supply of carbohydrates during performance will help decrease an athlete?s reliance on their limited supply of glycogen.1 Aside from impaired performance, low glycogen levels can lead to muscle protein breakdown and, over the course of time, impaired immune functioning.2

Since the early days of sports nutrition research, our knowledge of carbohydrates has evolved. In recent years the focus has been on the optimal type of carbohydrate given at the right time to improve performance and enhance recovery. For years, sports nutritionists have recommended endurance athletes consume 30-60 grams of carbohydrates per hour during activity.

Though many athletes may need more, carbohydrate oxidation is limited when carbohydrate transporters are saturated. However, each carbohydrate has its own intestinal transporter; therefore, using multiple types of sugar increases the amount of total carbohydrates that can be oxidized and used as fuel.3,4 Using multiple forms of sugar as opposed to just one form can reduce fatigue and improve performance in endurance sports. Therefore sports drinks with a mix of sugars may be beneficial for endurance athletes or other athletes competing for three hours or more.5 Using multiple types of carbohydrates may also decrease the likelihood of digestive distress.

Another factor that leads to digestive distress is the type of carbohydrates used. Sports drinks with large amounts of fructose, galactose and amylose may lead to gastrointestinal distress because these sugars are absorbed more slowly that glucose, sucrose, maltose and maltodextrins.6

In addition to fueling during activity, post-activity fueling to replenish glycogen stores is critical for athletes who train daily and even more critical for those who train twice a day or for hours every day. Products created with maltodextrin, glucose and a patented highly branched, high molecular weight glucose polymer solution were shown to be the best options for glycogen replacement compared to an energy-equivalent drink comprised of monomers and oligomers of glucose and a lower molecular mass.7

Glycogen replenishment isn?t something of which only endurance athletes need to be conscious. Resistance exercise uses muscle glycogen stores. The recreational gym attendee does not need carbohydrates after a resistance training session because he can replace his glycogen over a 24-hour period if he consumes adequate amounts of carbohydrates.

However, Olympians and other high caliber athletes should replace their fuel tank of carbohydrates in the form of glycogen in their muscle tissue within the 30-minute window of opportunity after training or competition when their muscle tissue is most receptive to taking up carbohydrates. In addition, for the athlete who has a difficult time maintaining body weight or needs to gain weight, this is also a good opportunity to get more calories in the form of carbohydrates in the body.

Various forms of modified waxy maize are also gaining some popularity among athletes, though the research on this category of carbohydrates is lagging behind that of other carbohydrates. One in particular, a hydrothermally processed corn starch, was developed initially by one company for children with glycogen storage disease, though it has been used by some endurance athletes in an attempt to train for longer on less fuel (and therefore fewer calories).

This particular starch went head-to-head with maltodextrin in a study that examined metabolic and hormone responses to a 150-minute bout of cycling. The hydrothermally modified starch blunted the spike in glucose and insulin seen with maltodextrin and also increased the breakdown of fat, suggesting this was an alternate fuel source used during the exercise bout. However, no differences in performance were noted and future research will need to investigate if this form of carbohydrate can keep an athlete adequately fueled during long bouts of exercise while also examining how it affects measures of performance.

Protein and amino acids

Protein is essential for increasing muscle growth and repair while also blunting muscle protein breakdown. Scientists have examined the differences in types of protein and how they affect muscle growth, recovery and repair. The milk proteins whey and casein have dominated the protein market.

Though studies that have examined the effects of whey vs. soy have shown that whey has a significantly greater impact on muscle protein synthesis compared to soy.8 In addition, whey is a fast protein?meaning that the amino acids are quickly released into the bloodstream whereas soy is considered intermediate and casein slow because it coagulates in the stomach, slowing down the release of amino acids into the bloodstream. Emerging research is looking at combinations of these proteins for maximum stimulation of muscle protein synthesis due to their varying effects on the rise of amino acids in the bloodstream.

Various amounts of protein have been used in research settings, though a minimum of 25 grams of whey is suggested to maximally stimulate muscle protein synthesis. However, more may be necessary for some athletes depending on their training and food intake or the type of protein they choose post-exercise. Some have theorized in the past that the addition of high glycemic carbohydrates to protein will augment gains in muscle due to the effect these carbohydrates have on insulin levels. However, more recent research has shown that carbohydrates do not further stimulate muscle protein synthesis compared to protein alone if post-exercise protein intake is adequate.9,10 Despite the fact that carbohydrates may not further augment gains in muscle over time when used immediately after resistance training, the addition of carbohydrates is important for athletes who have back-to-back training sessions or train several hours in a day.

While the addition of carbohydrates to protein may not stimulate muscle growth to a greater extent than protein alone, protein may help carbohydrates by further enhancing muscle glycogen replenishment. Therefore, the ideal post-exercise sports nutrition product for an endurance athlete or an athlete who trains more than once per day or for several hours in a day combines carbohydrate with protein.11

Utilizing protein to augment muscle gains in response to resistance exercise is a well-accepted practice. However, for the first time ever, more recent research has shown that protein can also be used during repeated sprints to promote muscle protein synthesis. In one study, a mix containing 24 grams of whey, 4.8 grams of leucine and 50 grams of maltodextrin or a placebo was given to young males prior to a repeated sprint cycling session. The increase in anabolic signaling and muscle myofibrillar protein synthesis following the exercise indicates that this nutrient combination facilitates muscle protein synthesis during anaerobic exercise.12

While protein is most commonly used, there is also a role for the essential amino acids (EAAs). Branched chain amino acids (leucine, valine and isoleucine, which are part of the essential amino acids) when taken prior to resistance training increase muscle protein growth. Leucine in particular has an important role stimulating specific pathways underlying muscle protein synthesis.

In addition to the role the essential amino acids (EAAs) play in gaining strength, they can also be used during long duration endurance training or competition to help repair muscle tissue and attenuate the soreness and inflammation brought on by muscle breakdown during activity or used after activity to improve muscle protein growth during the recovery period.13 And finally, the EAAs can decrease muscle protein breakdown due to weight loss from the demands of endurance activity.

Caffeine, beta-alanine, creatine

Caffeine

Caffeine is one of the oldest performance-enhancing aids around. As a central nervous system stimulant it temporarily increases alertness, decreases fatigue and improves mental functioning.14 In addition, caffeine effectively enhances sports performance including maximal endurance exercise and high intensity exercise, when consumed in doses ranging from 3-6 mg per kilogram bodyweight. Like many ingredients, more isn?t better and higher doses of caffeine will not lead to greater performance enhancement. Despite its reputation, caffeine does not negatively affect fluid balance or lead to dehydration. Therefore this ergogenic aid can be used in both training and performance to keep an athlete?s head in the game while also providing a boost in performance.15

Beta-alanine

Beta-alanine is a relatively newer ingredient that is used to buffer fatigue. For decades athletes were fed information about lactic acid as the cause of all muscle fatigue and soreness. However, lactic acid isn?t the problem. Instead, the build-up of hydrogen ions and drop in muscular pH that occurs due to intense exercise is thought to be one of the main causes of fatigue. But the body produces a substance called carnosine that helps decrease or mitigate this type of fatigue by buffering the acidity produced by hydrogen ion accumulation. Though it may make sense, in theory, to consume carnosine to increase the body?s buffer system, supplemental carnosine cannot be taken up into the muscle intact and instead is broken down once it enters the digestive system. However, carnosine synthesis is limited without sufficient beta-alanine, the rate-limiting substrate in the synthesis of carnosine. Beta-alanine is not an instant fix, though. It takes 4-6 weeks for beta-alanine to increase intramuscular carnosine levels.

Delaying acid production helps delay muscular fatigue allowing you to train at a higher intensity while also improving recovery. Studies show that supplementation with beta-alanine can decrease neuromuscular fatigue during submaximal cycling and increase time to exhaustion.

Creatine

Aside from protein and total calorie intake, creatine is the next most effective supplement that can be used, in combination with an effective training program, to build muscle tissue. In addition, creatine is the single most effective ingredient for helping athletes gain lean body mass, strength, explosive power and improving sprint performance. Long-term (6-8 weeks) creatine supplementation combined with strength training increases lean body mass by about 7 pounds.

Though anecdotal reports suggested that creatine causes dehydration, this has never been proven in any clinical trials. In addition, creatine monohydrate has been found to be safe across a wide range of study subjects. It increases total body water and extracellular water and therefore may help regulate body temperature, reduce sweat rate, exercising heart rate (so that the heart isn?t working so hard in the heat) and maintain red blood cells per volume of blood (important for altitude).16,17

Sports nutrition is evolving and providing athletes with legal, effective methods for enhancing training and performance. The difference between winning and losing at the elite level is very small, so every edge an athlete can get could be critical to success.

Chinese space trio lands after historic trip

Three Chinese astronauts have returned to Earth after spending 13 days on a historic space mission that made their country only the third nation ever to dock a manned spacecraft to another craft in orbit.

The Shenzhou 9 space capsule landed at about 10 p.m. ET (10 a.m. Friday, Beijing time) in Inner Mongolia, an autonomous region of the People's Republic of China. The astronauts left the Tiangong 1 prototype space lab module a day earlier.

Their landing was broadcast live on China's state-run CCTV television network, showing the capsule streaking through the atmosphere like a meteor, deploying its main parachute, then making a final landing before rolling over on its side.

While the orbital linkups are important technological achievements for China, the mission also carried a wider social impact, because it included the country's first female astronaut, 33-year-old Liu Yang. The mission was commanded by veteran Chinese astronaut Jing Haibeng. The third crew member, Liu Wang, served as the Shenzhou 9 docking pilot.

The Shenzhou 9 mission, which launched into space on June 16, accomplished China's first manned space dockings. The Shenzhou spacecraft robotically docked to Tiangong 1 on June 18. Then, on June 24, the astronauts backed their capsule away from the orbiting module and came back in for another docking under manual control.

The successful linkups made China only the third country, after the United States and Russia, to accomplish manned dockings in orbit.

The Shenzhou 9 mission, as well as experiments performed aboard Tiangong 1 throughout the flight, tested technologies that will help China fulfill its goal of building a 60-ton space station in orbit by 2020. "The data will help us improve technologies for astronauts' future, long-term stays in a space station," said Chen Shanguang, chief commander of the mission's astronaut system, according to Xinhua.

China does not have a role on the International Space Station, a 430-ton outpost in low Earth orbit that is jointly operated by 15 nations. But Chinese officials have outlined an ambitious space program for the nation, which includes collecting samples from the moon and robotically returning them to Earth before landing astronauts on the lunar surface.

The Shenzhou 9 mission is China's fourth manned spaceflight. Previous expeditions were launched in 2003, 2005 and 2008.

The Tiangong 1 test module was launched into orbit in September 2011. In November, a robotic spacecraft, called Shenzhou 8, completed the country's first unmanned space docking. According to Chinese officials, Tiangong 1 has performed well, and could play host to another crew in the near future.

"Based on current conditions, the service of Tiangong 1 can be extended," Xinhua quoted He Yu, the commander-in-chief for the Shenzhou 9 mission, as saying. "It has consumed less than one-fourth of its fuel and no backup systems have been used."

Depending on its condition, the module could remain in orbit as China continues its space station construction efforts.

"If Tiangong 1 was in perfect shape, it could work side by side with Tiangong 2, which will be launched in the future," He said.

Evening Snack: You can go healthy again with some fruit juice and a bowl of fruit salad, but if you?ve been moderate in your other meals, you?ve probably earned yourself some chocolate chip cookies and muffins. Indulge those taste buds, but don?t pig out!

Caffeine: Your caffeine intake should be severely restricted during pregnancy because of the risk it poses to the baby. In some cases it could even cause a miscarriage. Pregnant women are advised to limit caffeine intake to no more than 200mg of caffeine per day. Caffeine is present not just in tea and coffee, but it is also a common ingredient in many aerated drinks and colas.

Alcohol: Restrict your alcohol intake or abstain completely, as increased alcohol consumption can severely threaten the unborn child.

It is advisable that you maintain high standards of hygiene when handling and preparing meals. Consult with your health care provider for more specific instructions on foods to avoid during pregnancy.

GOP Milks Healthcare Ruling on Twitter, Obama Camp Ignores It

The GOP-promoted Twitter hashtag #FullRepeal is trending as the party and its presidential nominee Mitt Romney collaborate to turn today's Supreme Court ruling on healthcare into a Twitter-fueled online fundraising windfall.

As of around 11 this morning, the Romney camp had raised $100,000 - presumably online - following the ruling to uphold President Barack Obama's Affordable Care Act. Around 20 minutes later, Press Secretary Andrea Saul tweeted another fundraising milestone: $200,000 in "organic' donations. Around 15 minutes later, Saul bumped it up to $300,000 raised. Forty minutes after that, she pegged it at $375,000.

The fundraising campaign is anything but organic. In addition to running paid tweets using the #FullRepeal hashtag, the Republican National Committee is pushing out a video and microsite attacking "Obamacare."

"The final verdict on the Obama healthcare law is now in your hands," begins a text-driven 1-minute video that pans the healthcare law as one that will harm small business and threaten "fundamental freedoms." The video is on YouTube and the GOP's PeopleVObamacare.com.

The MittRomney.com site also backs the message. "Obamacare Upheld - Elections have consequences," states a large image displayed on the homepage. Evidently, those consequences come in the form of donation dollars.

Republican-leaning small business group The National Federation of Independent Business is also banking on the ruling to drum up donations. A promoted tweet targeted to people searching Twitter for Obamacare related terms reads, "Our fight for real reform does not end with today's #SCOTUS ruling," and features the #RepealAndReform tag.

One wonders what will become of the videos and email copy created to respond to alternative rulings - the virtual versions of those Super Bowl T-shirts touting the losing team that get shipped off to impoverished kids in war-torn lands.

The Obama campaign, on the other hand is not milking the ruling for donations on Twitter or Facebook - yet anyway. The @Obama2012 reelection Twitter account has remained silent today.

Still, although OFA is not pushing out any messages about the decision upholding the administration's controversial law, people who search Google for "Obamacare" will see a sponsored result from the Obama camp. The ad drives people to a page on the campaign site that reads simply, "I like ObamaCare and I want everyone to know." Rather than helping people share that declaration in support of the law in social media circles, the page merely features an email sign-up form that links to a donation page.

The lack of social media and online ad promotion of the ruling backing the president's healthcare law is almost certainly strategic. Romney and the Republicans can use it to harness anger among anti-Obamacare conservatives and rake in donations. However, perhaps because recent polls show more Americans oppose the law than support it, OFA is taking a cautious approach to using it as a campaign issue.

Instead, the Obama camp appears to be sticking to local swing state issues needed to persuade voters in battlegrounds. The most recent @Obama2012 tweet was made yesterday and promotes a video aimed at Ohio voters that suggests Romney does not support firefighters, teachers, and police.

On Facebook, Obama reaffirmed a recent campaign theme claiming that he "will be the first president in modern history to be outspent in his re-election campaign," and asking for donations to "help close the gap."

Not all Democratic organizations are ignoring the Supreme Court ruling today. The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee is aiming for email sign-ups from supporters of the healthcare law. "Do you heart Obamacare? Get the sticker here!" exclaims a tweet that links to a sign-up form collecting contact information in exchange for an "I [heart] Obamacare" bumper sticker.

Scientific American has featured countless contributions from notable scientist-authors in its 167-year history. Among them, nearly 150 Nobel Prize winners have written for the magazine, contributing more than 200 articles altogether. In the July issue, we featured 12 excerpts of those articles written by past winners of the Nobel Prize in Physics to coincide with the 62nd annual Nobel Laureate Meeting in Lindau, Germany, which this year focuses on physics.

To give a more complete picture of the tales of discovery contained in the magazine's archives, we have selected three additional articles penned by physics Nobelists. All three, excerpted below, relate in some way to the research that earned their respective authors a Nobel.

The 1930 account of William H. Bragg, for instance, describes how x-rays can provide a window into crystalline structure. He had shared the 1915 Nobel Prize in Physics with his son for advancing that field of inquiry. Likewise, laureate Donald A. Glaser won in 1960 for the invention detailed in his 1955 article, "The Bubble Chamber." And the most recent physics Nobel, in 2011, went to a trio of researchers who played a leading role in the discovery that the universe's expansion is accelerating, thanks to "dark energy." One of those researchers, Adam G. Riess, co-authored a 2004 article in Scientific American, excerpted below, about the effort to determine just when the universe began to speed up.

Man, having the power to forecast the result of overcoming difficulties and the wish to try to overcome them, has devised various ingenious methods to help him in his task. Taking first of all the difficulties that depend on the inadequacy of his vision he has invented the microscope which gives him the power of seeing details thousands of times too fine to be perceived by the naked eye.

But there is a point which the microscope can not pass. With its aid we perceive what is very small, but not the "very very" small. There are details of the structure of the living cell, essential features in the composition of metals, cotton, silk, rubber, paint, bone, nerve, and a thousand other things which are hidden even from the microscope, and must always remain so hidden because the failure does not lie with the skill of the optician but with the incapacity of light itself.

The nature of radiation is in many respects a mystery, but we know enough about it to understand that we may talk of it in many of its important aspects as waves in some medium which we call the ether. If the radiation falls on any object, it is turned aside and modified in various ways. When our eyes are directed towards the object, they take in the modified rays, and we have learned by long practice to know, from these modifications, the nature of the object that has made them. That is "seeing."

The central point of the process is the act of scattering and modification. Now waves have a certain wavelength, and common experience of such waves as may be seen, for example, on the surface of the sea tells us that an object which is very much smaller than the length of the wave has no appreciable effect upon it. In just the same way there may be objects which are so small that they can not affect a ray of light, and such objects are forever invisible in the ordinary sense. The length of the light wave which our eyes can perceive lies within a short range on either side of a fifty-thousandth of an inch.

The X rays break down the barrier for us, and admit us to this immense field in which we want to be. They do so by virtue of their character as light waves, 10,000 times or so smaller than visible waves, but of exactly the same nature.

Liz Sterling, M.A.: Is It Really Better to Give Than Receive?

I was recently asked to write an article on "giving" and realized in a nano second that this is a sensitive subject for me. I've been accused of giving too much, bending over backwards, giving more than I receive. Sometimes, my giving is caregiving and co-dependent.

As I considered my relationship with giving, I realized the issue is not with giving too much but with receiving too little, a common problem in our society. It's more difficult simply because of cultural conditioning. Giving is modeled by our parents, taught in church or synagogue. It's an especially familiar role for women who are conditioned to be caregivers. Giving is generally viewed as honorable and praiseworthy. Even the Bible says, "It is better to give than receive." (Acts 20:35) No wonder many of us feel better about ourselves when we give. No wonder we have enormous confusion in this area.

I've always been a giver, a doer and caretaker. It's easy for me to listen, to advise and to guide. One day, my rabbi friend asked me to practice listening as my weekly assignment so I could be a good giver. "What," I cocked my head in confusion, declaring, "I am a good listener. I help people all the time." And he replied, "This week, listen consciously."

Throughout the week, on many occasions, friends and clients would ask for help, advice or just a good listening ear. My readiness to help would cause me to lean into them and offer my opinion or observation. But then, I remembered my assignment and watched as my body language changed. To listen and to help consciously, I had to lean back -- taking in more than I was giving. To truly help and give counsel, I had to take a step back to receive the information and the totality of the person before me. Only then could I truly give what was needed in the moment. I had an "Aha!" experience and realized that to give, I must become present in the moment, take a new stance, create more space, receive, and then, in true service to the other, I can give.

Author and spiritual teacher Shakti Gawain said, "Receiving and giving are opposite energies that are inextricably linked together in the natural flow of life, like inhaling and exhaling. If one aspect of that cycle doesn't function, the entire cycle ceases to function and the life force cannot move freely." It is all about a balance between giving and receiving. As Walt Whitman said, "When I give, I give to myself."

It is great to give, and it can feel like an elixir. We give of ourselves, we give gifts, we give advice and we give our love. It is easy to address giving. The real opportunity is to feel into receiving. From there, we can truly understand Maya Angelou's statement, "I have found that among its other benefits, giving liberates the soul of the giver." Yay, to conscious giving and receiving -- a great GPS for the Soul!

New Las Vegas airport terminal adds flash

The newest, shiniest, big thing in Las Vegas isn?t a hotel-casino or another Cirque de Soleil show.?It's "T3" -- the $2.4 billion Terminal 3 at McCarran International Airport.?

Sixteen international carriers will move their flights to T3 on Wednesday and Thursday. Five domestic carriers (Alaska, Frontier, JetBlue, Sun Country and Virgin America) will begin service out of T3 on July 31. United and Hawaiian will begin operating out of T3 in late August.


The 14-gate terminal, the largest modern public works project in Nevada, is expected to serve more than 11.3 million passengers annually. The terminal includes many high-tech features and other amenities designed to increase efficiency and help make what officials consider to be the front door to the city as exciting as the city itself. ?

?The visitor experience in Terminal 3 will be unlike any other in the country,? said Rossi Ralenkotter, president and CEO of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority. ?From the moment passengers step out of the plane, they will immediately have a unique sense of place and receive the type of Las Vegas welcome we want them to receive.?

Setting the tone will be neon signs emulating the iconic ?Welcome to Las Vegas? sign that greets travelers on Las Vegas Boulevard, large-scale artwork and new technology that allows airlines to invite passengers to weigh, pay for and tag their own bags at more than 200 self-service kiosks and to scan their own boarding passes and self-board at the gates.

?We are unaware of any other large U.S. airport that utilizes the various technologies McCarran has deployed,? said Rosemary Vassiliadis, Clark County deputy director of aviation. Over the years, she added, McCarran has also been among the first airports in the country to introduce amenities such as free wireless Internet access, radio frequency identification tags for checked luggage and other technology.

Sin City is a major entertainment center and business travel destination, known for its carefully cultivated image, gambling and nightlife.

New technology will make it easy to get around T3. Flight, baggage and wayfinding information are displayed on more than 900 large-screen digital signs. And, at the gates, digital signage on pylons display high-resolution photos of iconic attractions passengers might see at their flight?s destination.

Like the rest of airport, T3 has complimentary wireless service, but it also offers travelers 16 new shops and restaurants, plenty of power outlets for recharging gadgets, historical photographs and artwork that includes a sculpture of two airplanes made out of 3,000 smaller sculptures of butterflies suspended on fine wires. ??

And for those visitors who want to get right down to business upon arrival ? or who want to continue gambling until they absolutely must leave for home ? there are almost 300 slot machines scattered throughout McCarran International Airport?s new terminal.

?We simply hope our customers will remember the good times they had while in Las Vegas, and leave McCarran with nothing but the good impressions that stem from a seamless travel experience at the airport,? said Vassiliadis.

(AP) ? President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden unleashed a back-to-back assault Tuesday on Republican challenger Mitt Romney, re-emphasizing Democratic assertions that Romney as a venture capitalist sent U.S. jobs overseas and paid no heed to the impact on American workers.

"You've got to give Mitt Romney credit," Biden said while campaigning in Iowa. "He's a job creator in Singapore, China, India."

Obama, who was holding fundraisers in Atlanta and Miami, cast his Republican rival as the type of wealthy investor whose only goal was making money no matter the cost.

"Governor Romney and his allies believe that we should go back to the top-down economics of the last decade. They believe that if we eliminate regulations and we cut taxes by trillions of dollars, we just leave the market alone, that everybody will prosper," Obama said in Miami Beach. "They argue that if you help corporations and wealthy investors maximize their profits by whatever means necessary, whether it be layoffs or outsourcing, union busting or whatever means are available, that will automatically translate into jobs and prosperity to benefit everybody."

Behind the criticism of Romney's business record is the Obama campaign's belief that the effort to undermine a potential Romney strength ? his experience as the successful head of the private equity firm Bain Capital ? is yielding results and raising questions with voters.

Biden made note of news reports that Bain took over firms that sent jobs to China and India and opposed union efforts to increase wages and improve benefits. The Romney campaign has argued that the reports aren't accurate and don't take into account how work done overseas supports U.S. exports.

"The president and I don't see American workers as part of the problem. We see them as the heart of the solution," he said.

Romney campaign spokeswoman Andrea Saul called Biden's comments misleading and said they were an effort to distract voters from Obama's "disastrous economic record."

"President Obama has failed to meet his own standard for lowering unemployment because he has no idea what it takes to get our economy moving again," Saul said in a statement. "On Day One, Mitt Romney will take action to jumpstart our economy and give job creators the incentives they need to thrive here in America."

The back and forth on Romney's business record has become a familiar campaign theme. A political committee supporting Obama began airing an ad over the weekend accusing Romney of making millions while shutting down an Indiana paper plant.

Biden was beginning a two-day visit to Iowa, a swing state whose six electoral votes could be significant in the November election. He spoke to more than 400 people, many of them union members from a John Deere factory, transit workers and members of a public employees union.

For Obama, it was the second day of targeting Romney. He emphasized that their contest is a choice between ideologies, not a referendum on his own performance.

"The question is not whether we need to put more folks back to work or whether we need to see the economy growing faster or whether we need to bring down our debt," he told the crowd of donors in Atlanta. "The question is how do we do it."

The president held two fundraisers in Atlanta, followed by two events in Miami Beach, including a performance by singer Marc Anthony, raising at least $2.3 million.

Obama was holding the fundraisers at the start of a pivotal week for his campaign. The Supreme Court is expected to rule on his health care overhaul law on Thursday, passing judgment on the most significant piece of legislation during his presidency.

And it comes as Obama and his team have warned that Romney and his Republican allies would outspend him during the presidential campaign.

In an e-mail to supporters Tuesday, Obama bluntly stated: "I will be the first president in modern history to be outspent in his re-election campaign, if things continue as they have so far."

The urgent tone was designed to spur more giving. Until last month, Obama had been by far the leading fundraiser in the presidential contest. But Romney, after securing the nomination, has consolidated his support.

Romney raised more than $76 million last month for his presidential campaign and for the GOP, compared to $60 million for Obama and the Democrats. Obama's advisers say they expect Republican-leaning super PACs to pull in $1.2 billion before the election, posing a big-money challenge for the president. Obama has more than $100 million in his campaign account, but Democratic super PACs have struggled to raise money.

Obama has now raised the stakes, saying that even without the help of GOP-leaning super PACs, Romney could still outspend him.

"You're going to have more money spent in this election than ever before by the other side on negative ads," Obama said in Atlanta. "And their message will be simple. They'll say, the economy is bad and it's Obama's fault."
