Electrical Construction Association Validates Fiscal Cliff Fears ...

The National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA) recently surveyed its members to assess how the ?fiscal cliff? will affect the electrical construction industry. The results of the survey clearly indicate that NECA members are being negatively affected by the fiscal cliff and that they are preparing for the worst, should the 2001 and 2003 tax breaks expire on January 1, 2013.

The survey netted nearly 400 responses, and all were in unanimity about their concerns over the effect the fiscal cliff. The looming threat of more taxes and less investment continues to hamper growth for electrical contractors nationwide. Nearly two-thirds of the respondents said that their company is organized as an S-Corporation ? ?flow-through? businesses whereby their business income flows through to the shareholder or owner, who then pays taxes on that income at the individual tax rates. Owing to this tax classification of their business, proposals to raise taxes on upper-income Americans will affect most NECA members nationwide. The survey results also confirmed that 80 percent of NECA contractors are small businesses.

According to survey responses, if a deal is not reached to avert the fiscal cliff:

?67% will reduce their workforce
?67% will postpone hiring
?73% will postpone or cancel purchasing new equipment
When asked to compare their business from 2011 to 2012:
?42% of respondents reported that their company had seen an increase in business in 2012 when compared to 2011.
?39% reported having less work in 2012.
?65% do not expect business to increase in 2013 due to increasing tax burden, uncertainty in the tax code, and sluggish demand for construction.

?The results are clear. This survey reaffirms what we have heard from business owners all year long ? that until real solutions are finalized by Congress and the President, they are going to hold back on everything, from expenses to hiring,? explained Marco Giamberardino, NECA executive director, government affairs.

?Construction was disproportionately hurt during the recession, and contractors have struggled to make up more ground than other industries in the recovery,? Giamberardino said. ?Contractors can be prolific job creators and economic investors when potentially devastating tax increases are on the horizon.?

Concerning the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts, NECA members rated their top tax issues for their companies:

?41% support changes in individual tax rates
?28% demand a permanent reduction in the estate tax rate
?22% called for changes in other investments affecting capital gains and dividend tax rates
?14% advocated for Energy Efficiency Incentives

During the recession, NECA contractors began to grow their business model beyond the typical electrical construction work. As the industry continues to evolve, more contractors are leading the charge into new energy-efficiency markets and streamlined their operations with services like pre-fabrication, which ultimately benefits their customers.

?There is new demand for energy solutions that electrical contractors can provide, especially with high energy costs,? Giamberardino said. Many credit their company?s survival during the recession with the ability to expand their scope of work in these growth areas.

The survey also gave NECA contractors the opportunity to voice their recommendation on how to address the fiscal cliff:

?47% think the time for entitlement reform is now.
?43% believe reducing and prioritizing spending is the best solution.
Additional responses included the following:
?Permanently extending the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts;
?Increasing federal investment in infrastructure;
?Having both political parties work together to create a bipartisan solution;
?Reviewing and reprioritizing federal spending based on actual needs; and
?Preventing increases in taxes for small businesses so they can afford to hire more employees and help the economy grow.

Businesses continue to yearn for a sense of certainty and permanency from Congress or they will not be able to keep up with the always changing, costly administrative burden. The average annual cost for NECA contractors to comply with yearly changes to the tax code is $51,991. The costs range from $500 to $1 million, depending on the size of the firm. ?Our members believe the work is there ? but they are limited from pursuing it until they know where their company stands in terms of the tax code,? Giamberardino said.

NECA has repeatedly urged Members of Congress and President Obama to work together to avoid the fiscal cliff and resolve the complex fiscal policy questions hurting electrical contractors. More about NECA?s positions on the estate tax, energy efficiency, and the association?s wide portfolio of issues can be viewed online.

Report says life expectancy up in B.C.; cancer still leading cause of death

VICTORIA - B.C.'s most-recent vital-statistics report says residents of this province continue to live longer than anywhere else in Canada, although cancer remains the leading cause of death.

The 140th edition of the report by the Vital Statistics Agency contains information about births, deaths and marriages for 2011 and helps the provincial government develop plans for health research and education.

It says life expectancy climbed to 82 years, up from 81.7 years, but the oldest person to die in 2011 lived to be 112 years old.

Cancer remains the leading cause of death, but the report says deaths due to HIV fell to 59 from 253 in 1996.

While the total number of deaths rose to 31,776, the province's population grew naturally by 12,215 people, without taking migration into consideration.

The report says the most popular names selected for boys were Liam, Ethan, Mason, Lucas and Benjamin, but for girls the names Emma, Olivia, Sophia, Ava and Chloe won out.

South Africa: Mandela convalesces at home

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? South Africa's presidency says it has no updates on the condition of former leader Nelson Mandela, who is convalescing at home after a hospital stay and is reported to be doing better.

The South African Press Association quotes presidential spokesman Mac Maharaj as saying Saturday that he has no new information on 94-year-old Mandela, who was released from a hospital on Wednesday. The former president, who spent 27 years in prison under apartheid, was admitted Dec. 8 and received treatment for a lung infection.

He also had a procedure to remove gallstones.

Maharaj previously said doctors have noted progress in Mandela's condition but will continue to treat him at his home in the Johannesburg neighborhood of Houghton.

The Faerie Gardens' Culture of Creativity | Nature Nurtured

by Rachel and D. Melcher

Your Family is a series of monthly articles featuring pagan families, like yours. By sharing some of their stories and traditions, we hope to inspire readers to find their own path to a love-filled and magickal family life.

faeriegardens2

This month, we had the pleasure of interviewing Diana, a New York teacher and artisan, about her family?s culture of creativity. She met her love, Jacqueline, in 2004 and by the Fall of the next year, had moved in to form the Faerie Gardens? Family with Jacqueline?s four children?Antonio, Lia, JoAnn, and Esme. The family craft a cozy home life in the country together, sharing a small house on three wooded acres, not far from the shores of Lake Ontario. The Faerie Gardens? have developed a family identity of close-knit diversity and powerful creative spirit. Each member of the family is encouraged in their respective creative talents and many contribute items to Diana?s Etsy shop?Faerie Garden Fancies. I chose them for our Imbolc issue because I feel that they embody the light, art, and poetry of the Sabbat. I wanted to know, more than anything, how one woman?s entrance into a family helped to spark and support fierce and independent creative expression in its children.

faeriegardens3Q: What does earth-reverent parenting mean to you?
A: We find that our paganism is the foundation of our family structure and relationships, including many of our ?outside of the box? views. In our family, everyone has a say in our daily rhythms and routines, as well as the big decisions. We feel that it is important that each family member is treated as a full and valuable member of the family. We try to avoid coercion and manipulation in our interactions and instead work hard to really see and understand each other. It isn?t always easy, but we strongly believe that you can find solutions to problems that take everyone?s needs into consideration. Jacqueline chose to homeschool the children before they were born, and by the time I came into the picture, it had evolved to unschooling. I could easily see how effective & loving Jacqueline?s methods were.

Q: How does art and creativity play a role within your family life?faeriegardens4
A: I?ve been crafty all my life ? coloring then drawing, writing and painting, gluing stuff together? and when Jacqueline and the kids came along, it was only natural to share that with them. I?ll admit, I did (and maybe do) have a hard time sharing supplies, and often have more plans to do things than actual time to do them, but I love spending time creating with the kids. Antonio is a technophile and loves to do crafty things with wire repurposed from old computers. Esme is the true artist, constantly drawing since she first learned she could; she plans to go to Pratt University for animation next fall and has been selling commissions for quite awhile to support her endeavors. JoAnn?s creative talent is in faeriegardens5the kitchen, baking up cakes & cookies and other tasty treats to please everyone in the house. Lia is quite a seamstress, first sewing doll clothes (which she sells here), then sewing her own clothes. Jacqueline isn?t much for crafting (except for the occasional beading project) but she loves to research and has a wonderful shop of vintage candlesticks and copper molds called Copper Clad Treasures.

Q: Do you have any advice for other earth-reverent families looking to incorporate art and creativity into their homes?
faeriegardens6A: For other families that want to instill a similar love and self-confidence in art and creative expression in your home and children, I would say trust yourself and trust your kids. Never say you can?t draw or paint, or create something wonderful, whether with clay or beads, wire or fabric, or even cakes and cookies. You?re not going to paint like Van Gogh overnight, any easier than you learn to do anything complex overnight. It takes practice, practice, practice, and as a parent the best thing you can do is validate your child?s frustrations, and encourage them to keep following their passions. It doesn?t necessarily have to be great and wondrous art, if the time you spend doing it, brings you joy, keep doing it!

Q: What spiritual path or tradition does your family follow?faeriegardens7
A: We both came to paganism on different paths and even today hold differing views of things, but our core belief ? respect for all ? allows us to joyfully embrace our family?s unconventional way of living and diverse views. Our belief, that all beings ? human & animal, child & adult ? deserve the same care and consideration when it comes to their needs and wants, is what drives us. Although we regularly celebrate the Sabbats & Esbats (as well as many other holidays ? anything for a party here!), JoAnn & Lia identify as Christian and felt they were missing that part of life. So we searched high & low for a local church to support our children?s unorthodox family life and found a wonderful community with a Unitarian Universalist church about 40 minutes away, who were welcoming to children with same-sex parents, as well as to both Christians and pagans!

faeriegardens8Q: Do you have a special ritual space within your home?
A: Jacqueline & I continue to celebrate the Sabbats and have a monthly Esbat rituals with festivities that include a family dinner, and whoever wants to participate with us. Antonio usually chooses to refrain from anything resembling religion, while Esme (who identifies as pagan), and even Lia & JoAnn often take part in our rituals that sometimes flow spontaneously, and sometimes are well thought out in advance. We haven?t got a lot of space for a formal altar, but the top of Jacqueline?s dresser serves as a small personal altar for the two of us, and most of our family rituals take place around the dining room table or around a bonfire in the back yard. Sometimes we?ll even head to the lake for our rituals.

faeriegardens10Q: As this edition of Nature Nurtured is thematically linked to Imbolc, can you tell us about what this Sabbat means to you?
A: Imbolc is special to me personally. It is the first Sabbat I ever did any ritual for ever, and has always been fun for me since before I found my path to paganism because of Groundhog?s Day. My family has always believed it to be a day when you could truly feel Spring coming, no matter what the other days were telling you. By February 2nd, cabin fever has pretty well set in for the family, and the usual break in the weather means a trip to the lake, or a local park or nature center, to air out our lungs, stretch our limbs, and look for signs of Spring. We make Brigid?s Crosses and seedy braided bread, light lots of candles and contemplate the things we want to grow in our lives in the upcoming year.

Q: Can you tell us more about Faerie Garden Fancies?
A: Our family shop, Faerie Garden Fancies came into being in the summer of 2009 as a way to support the family over the summer when jobs for substitute teaching are suspended for the obvious reasons. It has continued as a way to stretch our budget when the subbing jobs don?t quite make ends meet. We all contribute to it in our own ways. Lia has been making stuffed animals, Esme has a few earlier drawings up, and Jacqueline has beaded some necklaces. JoAnn and Antonio have painted or sculpted a few things, but not very often as their creations don?t tend to travel well. I fill the majority of the shop with whatever strikes my fancy! Mostly I like to paint with acrylics on polymer clay, but also create polymer clay sculptures and paint watercolors.

Legitimate And Helpful Advice For Your Home-Based Business ...

Many people believe this prospect is nothing more than a fairytale. If you know the tricks on how to work from your home, it?s easier to run this type of business than you realize. In this article you will find advice regarding how to start a work from home business.

The name you choose should mean something. The name you make for yourself is going to give off the image you portray, so pick a name that your potential customers can relate to. The brand name may have a great true life story that it is related to. By doing this, your brand will become familiar and customers will be loyal to your product.

TIP! Prepare a written business plan if you have a home-based business. Even small businesses need a sense of direction.

If you are the sole owner of your home based business, make sure you are the sole financial decision maker as well. It might seem alright to let your significant other use your business credit card, but you may not be able to write off any purchases they make that are not business related.

To maximize the success of your home-business financial plan, claim every possible tax deduction related to your business. Claiming your deductions not only reduce your tax liability, but can also lower the rate you pay.

If your online business is a daycare, then you may need to hire some help to keep the kids in line. You will have a hard time without help if you have a lot of kids to control and feed.

TIP! If your business has a base of operations separate from your home, make certain you use its location for your business address, rather than a post office box. Your customers will feel more comfortable knowing your company is not a faceless entity.

Make your home based business look like a real, professional business. If you website does not look like it is professionally created it will steer people away. Always look for successful websites to help determine the best ideas for building your own.

Your phone traffic will increase greatly when you run a home based business. For this reason, it is vital to setup a separate business phone line coming into your home. You will be able to turn the ringer off of that phone when you are not open for calls.

Write a business objective. This is a short, punchy description of your company and its services. Give your objective when people ask about your business. This will help you sound confident when you are talking about your company, and this confidence will be apparent to your customers.

TIP! Don?t get impatient. A home based business isn?t going to grow into a powerhouse overnight.

It?s true that many long to have their own business that they can operate from home. Sadly, many of these work from home business enthusiasts will never learn how to follow their dreams. This article has the advice that will help you create the work from home business you want.

Brazil proposes looser fiscal rules to spur growth

SAO PAULO (Reuters) - Brazil's government has proposed changes to a fiscal responsibility law that set the foundation for a decade of economic prosperity in Latin America's largest economy, two local newspapers said on Saturday.

The changes would make it easier for the government to cut Brazil's high tax burden and enact other stimulus measures after two years of slow economic growth, but they could also rattle investors who fear President Dilma Rousseff has been too quick to modify bedrock economic principles.

Changing part of the law enacted in 2000 would remove "the shackles of economic policy," an unnamed source from the finance ministry told Estado de Sao Paulo newspaper.

A finance ministry spokesman did not respond to an emailed request for comment.

Rousseff's economic team included the proposed changes in a bill aimed at fiscal reform at the state level on Friday, the newspapers said. That day, the government also posted a deficit of 5.5 billion reais ($2.7 billion) for November, jeopardizing its ability to meet a closely watched annual fiscal target.

The government needs to post a primary surplus of 31.5 billion reais in December to meet the target, and on Friday passed a decree that would allow it to dip into its sovereign wealth fund if tax income is lower than expected this month.

Rousseff has dished out tax breaks and intervened in state-run companies to cut electricity costs as she tries to boost growth, but the measures have dragged down government revenues.

The fiscal responsibility law put an end to a series of financial crises that rocked Brazil in the 1980s and 1990s. Brazil's finances are much more solid now, but any change to the text could unsettle investors.

At the same time her commitment to fiscal responsibility is being questioned, Rousseff has been under pressure to make even deeper structural reforms since economic growth slowed to a mere 0.6 percent in the third quarter of 2012.

Those efforts have drawn criticism from the TCU, a government agency that audits public spending, according to stories in Folha de Sao Paulo and Estado de Sao Paulo newspapers on Saturday.

The government believes altering the fiscal responsibility law would remove such constraints. Congress will consider the proposal after February, the papers said.

Despite slow growth and the increasingly unlikely fiscal target, many aspects of Brazil's economy still seem healthy compared to much of the developed world.

Unemployment remains near a record low, the debt to gross domestic product ratio has fallen below that of the United States and many European economies, and Rousseff is popular among voters who believe the economy will eventually improve.

Charles Barkley Slavery Joke: Former NBA Great Goes There On TNT's 'Inside The NBA' (VIDEO)

Charles Barkley has never been a stranger to controversy, and Thursday night was no exception. During TNT's NBA halftime show, "Inside the NBA," the former basketball legend cracked a joke that caused many to take notice due to its reference to slavery.

When co-host Kenny Smith asked him to name his favorite president, Barkley gave an interesting, if not slightly awkward, answer.

"I love President Obama, but Abe Lincoln is my new favorite president," Barkley said. "You know why? Because if it weren't for him, we'd be calling Ernie 'boss.'"

Barkley was referring to co-host Ernie Johnson, the only white anchor on the panel, which also includes Smith and Shaquille O'Neal. The joke elicited laughter from both Smith and Shaq, while Johnson tried to change the subject, only to have the Big Aristotle revert back to calling him "boss."

While some on Twitter found the joke amusing, others thought it to be in poor taste:

Ben Manning

Charles Barkley's slavery joke was very solid. Hahaha.

Wondering your thoughts on Barkley. It's not in a movie, but it is making light of slavery on cable tv. http://t.co/DUYafyOW
Steve Lindsay

Charles Barkley makes a joke about slavery on national tv. Never a good idea.

The joke brings up the question of whether sports shows are an appropriate venue to discuss sensitive and complicated issues such as race in the first place.

The question was posed by HuffPost blogger B.J. Garrison last week in a post responding to the Rob Parker-RGIII controversy.

"Why is a discussion of racial identity necessary on a sports talk show?" Garrison asked. "What does any of this have to do with ... football?"

However, in reference to Barkely's remarks, SportsGrid's Glenn Davis notes that "not everyone could have pulled off such a joke."

"Yeah, most shows wouldn?t dare go there at all: but this [one's] willingness to do just that is what?s always separated [the show] from its peers," he wrote.

Business Insider's Cork Gaines seems to agree.

"The reason why the show is so good is because they are not afraid to push the limits of what should or should not be said on television. And because of that, you are often left wondering if they just went too far," he wrote.

Do you think Barkley's joke was funny or offensive? Let us know in the comments.

Worms turn metal into semiconductors

5 hrs.

Worms are useful in the garden and great for fish bait, but one of their talents has remained hidden ? until now. Scientists have discovered that worms can manufacture tiny semiconductors. ?

At King's College in London, researchers fed an ordinary red worm, Lumbricus rubellus, soil laced with metals. The worm produced quantum dots, nano-sized semiconductors that are used in imaging, LED technologies and solar cells. The experiment was published in the Dec. 23 issue of the journal Nature Nanotechnology.

The worms created these electronic components because of their ability to detoxify their body tissue. When worms ingest the metals, proteins in their body shuttle these "toxins" to tissues called chloragogen cells that are similar to a liver in mammals. In the case of?cadmium, a molecule called?metallothionein attaches to it to take it away.?Through several chemical steps the worm separates the metals from the organic molecules they are attached to and stores them in tiny cavities its body, but not forever: eventually whatever toxic metals the worm eats are excreted.?

Squirmy semiconductor factories
In the experiment the scientists spiked soil with cadmium chloride and sodium tellurite (sodium, telluride and oxygen). The ability of worms to process cadmium is well known, but it wasn't clear what they would do with the tellurium in the sodium tellurite.

The worms ended up making tiny particles of cadmium telluride, a crystalline compound that is also a semiconductor. Those tiny particles ? called quantum dots ? were then taken out of the worms' tissue. The dots themselves are only nanometers across. [Twisted Physics: 7 Mind-Bending Findings]

In biological imaging, quantum dots are used in place of dyes because they can be "tuned" to glow at specific wavelengths. Cadmium telluride dots, for example, glow green when hit with blue light. The researchers tested the dots on animal cells and found they worked as well as the ones created in laboratories.

The success doesn't mean that thousands of worms are to be sacrificed for dot-making, said co-author Mark Green, a reader in nanotechnology at King's College.

"The interesting bit is that semiconductor quantum dots, which emit light, were made in a living animal," he told Livescience via email. "The aim of the work wasn?t to come up with a new synthetic process of making dots that are better than bench-synthesized materials, it was just to see if we could do solid-state chemistry in a living animal ? and it appears we can!"

A dotty idea
Green said the idea occurred to him several years back when he was an Oxford University post-doctoral researcher. He heard a lecturer note that animals use certain proteins to get rid of toxic metals such as cadmium. Green realized he was doing something similar to make cadmium telluride quantum dots in the lab, sans worms.

He wondered if some extra chemical might spur worms to make their own cadmium telluride quantum dots.

"The big problem," he said, "was that I didn't know enough biology, and I could see immediately that trying to get the dots out of an animal would be a problem."

So Green shelved the idea for a few years, until he met Stephen St?rzenbaum, the lead author of the paper. St?rzenbaum told Green that he knew exactly where cadmium given to worms went: to the detoxifying chloragogen cells. Since the cadmium ? and thus the nanoscale dots ? would end up there, it would be relatively easy to get them out of the worm.

So they tried it. It worked.

"We were very surprised, didn't really expect it to work that easily," Green said.

The quantum dots Green and his team made aren't quite the quality of the lab-bench versions. That may change, though. "We'd like to think we can play around with some of the chemistry and make them better," Green said.

Asus G75VW-DH72

Gaming prowess rarely comes cheap, but that doesn't mean it can't at least be affordable. The Asus G75VW-DH72 gaming laptop may offer pricing and performance well below what tricked out systems like the Eurocom Scorpius can offer, but when stacked against mid-range gaming systems like the Alienware M17x R4, it still holds its own, getting you on the gaming grid for under two grand.

Design and Features
While previous incarnations of Asus' Republic of Gamers line have emulated stealth fighter jets and naval vessels, the G75VW's design is a little more conservative, especially for a gaming machine. It's not as slim as the Razer Blade (2012), by any means. The laptop is still large, measuring 2.0 by 16.3 by 12.6 inches (HWD), but has changed up the look a bit, adding metal accents around the keyboard and across the speaker grille, which break up the imposing all-matte-black look seen in designs past. The result is a gaming rig that looks almost professional. Now, don't misunderstand, at 8.7 pounds (10.9 with the power brick) you won't be lugging this laptop to and from work, but it wouldn't look completely out of place in an office environment.

Despite the conservative look, the gaming DNA is still there. The back end of the G75VW is dominated by large cooling vents, and Asus' designs are tweaked to keep the system cool but quiet, grouping the heat generating components toward the back of the system. The chiclet keyboard sits at a slight slope, but is otherwise competent, providing a shallow but firm key movement. The touchpad is the same high-quality touchpad found on the Asus G75VW-DS71, but with the shift to Windows 8, Asus has also added some gesture support for Windows 8-specific controls. A swipe from the right edge of the touchpad pulls up the Charms Bar, while a three-fingered swipe down cycles through open apps. Pinch and zoom and two-finger scrolling aren't new additions, but they take on new importance in the absence of a touchscreen.

You may not be touching the screen, but the 17.3-inch display is still bright and sharp, with 1920-by-1080 resolution providing 1080p whether you're playing Skyrim or watching The Dark Knight on Blu-ray. The sound is also pretty good (as tested with the new trailer for The Man of Steel), staying clear at high volumes and providing a fair amount of bass thanks to an integrated subwoofer.

In addition to a Blu-ray/DVD combo drive, the Asus G75VW is outfitted with four USB 3.0 ports (one with power for charging devices), Gigabit Ethernet, a 3-in-1 card reader (SDHC, MMC, MS), and jacks for headphone and microphone. You also get several options for video connectivity, with HDMI, VGA, and mini DisplayPort outputs. Wireless connections provide 802.11n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0.

The G75VW-DH72 pairs a 750GB spinning hard drive with a separate 256GB solid-state drive (SSD), letting you shift bulk data storage to the hard drive while keeping programs on the SSD for optimum performance. Included on the drive are Microsoft Office Starter 2010, a 60-day trial of Trend Micro Antivirus, Adobe Reader X, and Asus' Application Suite, which includes 3GB of free cloud backup with Asus WebStorage. Asus covers the G75VW-DH72 with a two-year warranty, but also includes a full-year of additional accidental damage coverage, 24/7 tech support, and 30-day "Zero Bright Dot" warranty on the display panel.

Performance
Asus G75VW-DH72 The Asus G75VW-DH72 is outfitted with a 2.4GHz quad-core Intel Core i7-3630QM processor with 16GB of RAM, and an Nvidia GeForce GTX 670M with 3GB of dedicated VRAM. The combination is potent?in Cinebench R11.5, the processor scored 6.44 points, outperforming both the Alienware M17x R4 (6.19 points) and the MSI GT70 0NE-276US (6.23 points), but falling behind both the Razer Blade (6.86) and the Eurocom Scorpius (7.29). The Asus G75VW-DH72 also made short work of our multimedia tests, completing our Handbrake video encoding test in 36 seconds, and Photoshop CS6 in 3 minutes 32 seconds.

Asus G75VW-DH72

Perhaps more important than general performance is how the G75VW-DH72 does with games. In Aliens vs. Predator, it racked up a respectable 55 frames per second (fps) at medium detail settings and 1,366-by-768 resolution, but dropped to a less than playable 18 fps when resolution was dialed up to 1,920-by-1,080. When tested with Heaven, however, it scored 70 fps at medium settings and a nearly playable 28 fps at 1080p. While you won't be able to go all out with the detail settings on high-end games, you will still see excellent performance on even the most demanding games, provided you back off on the eye-candy a bit.

The Asus G75VW-DH72 also did well in battery tests, lasting 3 hours and two minutes in our battery rundown test. While not even long enough to make it through a screening of Kurosawa's Seven Samurai, it's still pretty decent performance for a gaming laptop. Few laptops pass the three hour mark, with one of the few exceptions being the portability minded Razer Blade, which still only lasted 3 hours 53 minutes when tested with MobileMark 2006, our previous battery test.

As a decently priced mid-range gaming laptop, the Asus G75VW-DH72 offers great performance at an affordable price, letting you enjoy top of the line games (albeit with middle of the road graphics performance) for far less than a tricked out high-end system. It's an affordable option to the Alienware M17X R4, and as such, replaces it for our Editors' Choice mid-range gaming laptop.

(AP) ? Even Mark Zuckerberg's family can get tripped up by Facebook's privacy settings.

A picture that Zuckerberg's sister posted on her personal Facebook profile was seen by a marketing director, who then posted the picture to Twitter and her more than 40,000 followers Wednesday.

That didn't sit well with Zuckerberg's sister, Randi, who tweeted at Callie Schweitzer that the picture was meant for friends only and that posting the private picture on Twitter was "way uncool." Schweitzer replied by saying the picture popped up on her Facebook news feed.

The picture shows four people standing around a kitchen staring at their phones with their mouths open while Mark Zuckerberg is in the background.

Randi Zuckerberg, who used to run Facebook's marketing department and now produces a reality television show, eventually said Schweitzer was able to see the picture because they had a mutual friend. Those tweets have since been taken down.

Schweitzer declined to comment when reached by The Associated Press. Randi Zuckerberg didn't reply to a message via Twitter seeking comment.

Randi Zuckerberg used the dustup to write about online sharing etiquette.

"Digital etiquette: always ask permission before posting a friend's photo publicly. It's not about privacy settings, it's about human decency," she posted on Twitter.

But Randi Zuckerberg's comments sparked sharp reactions from people who thought the issue wasn't about etiquette, but rather Facebook's often changing and often confusing privacy settings.

"The thing that bugged me about Randi Zuckerberg's response is that she used her name as a bludgeoning device. Not everyone has that. She used her position to get it taken it down," said Eva Galperin of the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a privacy advocacy group in San Francisco.

While Facebook has made improvements in explaining the social network's privacy settings, Galperin said they remain confusing to most people. She added that with people using Facebook as part of their everyday lives, the consequences of fumbling privacy settings can become serious.

"Even Randi Zuckerberg can get it wrong. That's an illustration of how confusing they can be," she said.

The Menlo Park, Calif., company recently announced it is changing its privacy settings with the aim of making it easier for users to navigate them.

The fine-tuning will include several revisions that will start rolling out to Facebook's more than 1 billion users during the next few weeks and continue into early next year.

The most visible change ? and perhaps the most appreciated ? will be a new "privacy shortcuts" section that appears as a tiny lock at the top right of people's news feeds. This feature offers a drop-down box where users can get answers to common questions such as "Who can see my stuff?"

But Galperin said Wednesday's incident also illustrates a general concern about Internet privacy. Essentially, she said, if you share information or a photo with your social network, people in your network have the ability to share that with whomever else they choose.

The mobile photo-sharing service Instagram, which is owned by Facebook Inc., had to answer to backlash to privacy concerns recently when new terms of service suggested user photos could be used in advertisements. The company later said it would remove the questionable language.
